Handpainted mural at Glynwood Mansion, painted in the 1920s
When Scenic Wallpaper was tasked with removing this special hand-painted mural—a piece with a rich history that had already journeyed far—they approached the delicate artwork with the utmost care and precision to preserve its unique heritage.
The mural, now residing at Glynwood Mansion, has moved through generations and has found it’s third home.
The Glynwood House
The mural was painted in the 1920’s for a townhouse in Manhattan. The family owned Glynwood Farm in upstate New York, and they commissioned an artist to paint a mural on canvas of the Glynwood Estate, to be installed in their Upper East Side residence. The mural portrayed a picturesque scene of the Glynwood property and the surrounding countryside, as well as our client as a child, her dog, and her father fishing.

The family owned a third property in Millbrook, NY, where they kept horses. In the 1950s, they relocated the mural from their Upper East Side townhouse to this Millbrook property. During the reinstallation, an additional section of artwork was added to the far right side to complete the wall.
Recently, our client made the decision to donate the Millbrook property to the state of New York. As part of this transition, she wanted to remove the mural from the Millbrook estate and relocate it to Glynwood, which was the original inspiration for the artwork. Interestingly, this marked the first time the mural would be installed at Glynwood itself.

After installation and restoration, we used the extra pieces to create additional boards to send to the client, including the piece featuring her father fishing. The art boards were sent to her current home in Moab, Utah, where she has carried her values of land stewardship into management of ranching properties along the Colorado River, designed to provide habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife.

The Glynwood Estate became the Glynwood Center for Regional Food and Farming in 1929 and is still an important center for sustainable agriculture and rural conservation, focusing on training farmers, promoting sustainable farming techniques and regional food systems, and supporting local farm communities in the Hudson Valley and beyond.
