The Ogden Phipps estate, a Georgian Revival style residence, was designed in 1929 by architects Delano and Aldrich, two of the most accomplished architects of the 20th century. The home sits in the northwest corner of Henry C. Phipps’ 160 acre “Spring Hill” estate in Old Westbury, Long Island, part of Long Island’s Gold Coast estates. Ogden Phipps was an industrialist financier, a partner at Smith, Barney & Co. and chairman of Bessemer Securities Corporation, as well as a great horseman, carrying on the Phipps family tradition of breeding and racing thoroughbreds. Decoration was possibly later done by Denning & Fourcade.

In 2010, the residence was sold by Ogden’s daughter and renovations were made by interior designer Steven Gambrel, along with architect Oliver Cope and Olivia Rowan, the design director at Cope’s firm. Nothing had been updated since the 1930s, so they undertook the project to preserve the historic 20th century home, while updating it for a modern family.

Scenic Wallpaper was hired to clean, resecure loose spots and restore the handpainted Gracie wallpaper in the dining room, which had been been there since the house was built.

The early Gracie wallpaper was custom made for the space, which was unusual for the time. The design is not interrupted in the frame sections or at the casings, the pattern contained within the sections. The blue background of the sky had remained from its original color, having never been painted over.

After cleaning, we inpainted areas that had faded or chipped and covered a few water leaks that had occured over the years.

The birds were designed in pairs, which was common for the era.

More unusual are some of the specific birds, especially the hawk in the first photo below, shown hunting a smaller bird.
